JUANITO Chico gained a deserved first career win when taking the extended six-furlong Alan Blair Celebration of Life nursery handicap at Brighton on Tuesday afternoon.
The son of Pour Moi, who carries the colours of Tony Verrier, was officially 5lb ‘well-in’ having finished second at Epsom off the same mark nine days ago. Running in a hood for the first time, Juanito Chico was slowly out of the stalls but jockey Silvestre De Sousa quickly made up ground and was soon in front. He judged the pace to perfection and his mount kept responding to pressure as his rivals challenged inside the closing stages. As the line approached, Juanito Chico was in command and went on to win by half a length.
William said: “Juanito Chico is due to go up in the handicap so we are pleased to get a win next to his name. It’s great for his owner Tony Verrier, and hopefully he can go on from here.”
