MEXICAN VENTURE showed significant improvement as he made the frame on his second career start at Lingfield yesterday.

The Tobougg gelding never got involved on his debut at Newmarket last back-end, but it was a different story at the Surrey track.

Having raced a little keenly early on, he was settled by Jean-Pierre Guillambert towards the rear and then delivered for a stirring late challenge.

He was switched as the field powered down the straight and showed a good turn of foot to finish third, only a short head away from going one better.

Trainer William Jarvis said: “Mexican Venture had been working nicely but he certainly stepped up on what he showed on his debut.

“He finished his race well and I was pleased to see that he relaxed and travelled smoothly before picking up nicely.

“His performance augurs well for the future and I would like to think that in time he will stay 1m 2f.”
