THE MUMBO delivered a 40/1 stunner as trainer William Jarvis registered his first victory of 2009 on January 10.

The Bahamian Bounty filly, well backed ahead of finishing seventh on her debut last month, got off the mark at the second time of asking.

Jarvis stepped his charge up from 6f to 1m and the extended trip proved ideal - just - as she got up in the final strides to strike by a nose from Best In Class.

The Mumbo, who opened at 50/1 and touched 66/1 in the ring, was given a fine ride by jockey Joe Fanning. She was always handy and proved she wanted it most with her gutsy finish.

It was an emotional success for owner Willie Robertson as he bought the filly with his brother Peter in October 2007. That was the month in which Peter was diagnosed with cancer and sadly the following March he passed away. The filly was called The Mumbo after the childhood nickname the boys had for their mother Pamela.

William was thrilled to see The Mumbo win and it’s not unlikely that she may run again on the all-weather this winter.
