HEAD FIRST lunged late for a 16/1 success in an extended nine-furlong handicap at Wolverhampton this afternoon.
The Dansili filly was put up 3lb for finishing fourth in a similar race at the same venue last month, but defied the rise with a tenacious display under jockey David Probert.
She relaxed into the race to travel mid-division and the splits fell nicely for her in the final stages.
Probert drove her out in the closing strides and she stayed on stoutly to score by a head.
Winning trainer William Jarvis watched the event from the breeding stock sale at Tattersalls and remarked with a broad smile: "The training performance of the year!"
He didn't elaborate much as to why this was so, but the grin told its own story before he added: "I am just so delighted for her owner-breeders, Brian and Elaine Cooper who have been very patient. It's a pleasing result for us all."
